‘It’s like a dream come true’ | Atlanta sisters empowering Black women through fashion line at Target

You know the store where a quick trip to get a toothbrush ends up with 30 items at the register?

Kim and Keyondra Lockett are typical Target shoppers. Unlike most of us, they enjoy browsing their own collection.

When we got the email last May, we were like ‘it’s a no-brainer.’ Kim said they are shoppers and excited.

Target stores hosted several designers for eight years. In 2022, the Lockett’s clothing line will have a woman in it.

Kim said it was like a dream come true because they always wanted to have their stuff in Target, but they didn’t know if there was a space for them.

The Locketts have a problem with items selling out because the line of gender-neutral shirts, sweatpants, shorts, and shoes has only been available for a few weeks.

Kim said that people came in a matter of hours.

It is a feeling that is unlike any other, when you see your brand go crazy over it. It is strange.

They said it’s weird to see their brand in one of the country’s largest name-brand stores since the whole reason they started the brand was for representation.

Kim said that they didn’t see us in a lot of representation when it came to illustration graphics and graphic t-shirts. We decided to create what we didn’t see in both sizes.

Keyondra said that the size range and color range were meant to be inclusive to the wide range of Black bodies.

We’re not about colorism or anything here. She said that they’re just about empowering Black women.

Taking up space to showcase there is a place for everyone, representing community and togetherness.

Kim said, “Target giving behind brands like ours does boost a whole different narrative because no one will ever suspect that we have such greatness.”

It’s a story where two sisters become heroes in other’s eyes, as an excited Target employee recognized them and ran over to take a picture.

The older Black woman had a huge smile.

The Lockett’s story isn’t just about articles of clothing in Target and more about recognizing the beauty of Blackness and representation they helped create.

Kim and Keyondra said they will aim for that target.

“It’s something that should be seen throughout spaces everywhere, big business, small business, you know, whatever area, we should be represented in those areas,” Kim said.

The brand is available at Target stores and online.
